Day 4 of the World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Championship saw Great Britain take on Finland with both sides competing to finish 4th in Pool A and make it into the Top 8 of the competition. Finland had already beaten Poland which meant that a win would guarantee them 4th place where as GB were looking to take the win to leave them with tomorrow’s game against the hosts to secure their spot.
The match could not have started better for GB when captain, Martine Wright, served 2 aces and give the team an early lead. The opening exchanges were tight and the lead exchanged hands on several occasions with the scores levelling at 5-5 and 10-10. In the second half of the set, Finland looked strong and pulled away to take it 25-15.
In the second set, the score again reached 5 all before GB reached the technical timeout first, leading 8-6. The scores then levelled at 9-9 before Finland again pulled away taking the second 25-12.
GB started very brightly at the start of the third set as they fought to stay in the match and reach the top 8. GB raced to a 5-1 lead before Finland levelled the scores at 8-8. GB again pushed ahead and lead 16-13 at the technical timeout before an Amy Brierly ace extended the lead to 4. Unfortunately for the girls, Finland then came back strong and despite GB trading points, Finland took the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
There were positives to take from the game for the squad however the result means that the team will now play off for 9-12th place on Friday and Saturday. First up though they take on Poland at 8.30 BST tomorrow (Thursday) morning in the final game of the group. The hosts are also without a win but have had big crowds for their games this week and will be looking to give them something to cheer.
