A Successful weekend for GB Sitting Volleyball
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Branislav Kovac as the new Head Coach of the Great Britain Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team.
Branislav has a range of experiences in volleyball having grown up in a professional club in Slovakia before moving to England where he has played and recently coached in the National League. He was also a key member of the Surrey Gators Sitting Volleyball Team that won the Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix in 2013. Branislav is excited looking to the future:
For me personally, being a spectator at the London2012 Olympic and especially Paralympic Games was one of my strongest sporting experiences. Being appointed as the GB Head Coach to develop the legacy of London 2012 is a great honour and big challenge to walk in the shoes of very successful predecessors who built this programme.
The Men’s team have taken some time off from competitions in 2014 but I think holidays are overrated. There are only so many places you can visit and tomatoes you can grow before you want to be active and competitive again.
This team has a strong desire to be competitive and we will look to develop this over the coming months and years.
The announcement was made to the GB squad ahead of a squad camp which took place at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering on Saturday 16th August alongside a Talent ID day. The day set out to identify new players to join the GB teams on the journey towards Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and beyond.
15 hopefuls were put through their paces with a series of tests and on court activities that enabled Branislav and GB Women’s Head Coach, Ian Legrand, to assess their potential.
The day was a great success with a number of new players identified who will now be invited to attend GB training in the future.
The Great Britain Sitting Volleyball teams are supported by Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It, a charity partnership announced earlier this year. You can support the squad by downloading the splash the cash shopping app to your computer which will allow you to raise money when you shop online at no extra cost to you. http://volleyballengland.org/performance/gb_sitting_volleyball/dba
